Project Description
The aim of this research project is to identify the link between human appropriation of net primary production (HANPP) and final consumption of goods and services. While economic production activities are responsible for most of the environmental impacts, they are ultimately driven by the final consumption of products. This project will focus on an integration of global HANPP into environmentally extended multiregional input-output analysis and it will calculate HANPP from a consumer responsibility perspective on a national level, i.e. “national HANPP footprint”. While HANPP is a recognized indicator of environmental pressure, it has not been integrated into a multiregional input-output framework. The results will be analyzed and published in scientific journals. This project will provide evidence regarding environmental pressure related to land use abroad induced by domestic consumption. This interdisciplinary project bridges economics and natural sciences. The general research area is Industrial Ecology and Sustainability

Project objectives
- Develop and apply a method for connecting Human Appropriation of Net Primary Production (HANPP) and a multiregional input-output (MRIO) analysis
- Quantify global HANPP from a consumer responsibility perspective on a national level
- Analyze HANPP displacements by international trade
